Fire sponges put out fire and soul fire. When soaked they become burnt.

Search limit

Fire does not fill a space the way water does, so the fire sponge's search goes through air and other blocks as well as fire. Every block near the sponge counts toward the search limit. The base Fire Sponge only covers about 3 blocks in every direction, even though its reach is 6. Use the range explorer to compare tiers.

Fire Sponges are also found in ruined portals, desert pyramids and desert village houses, and the Wither drops Compressed Fire Sponge 2x (Loot). The Fire Sponge Trader in deserts and badlands sells every tier.

Burnt sponges

A burnt fire sponge resets the moment it is placed:

• in a snowy biome (where snow foxes spawn),
• in any ocean biome, or
• touching water on any side.

The quickest way is to place it next to a water source. You can also reset it in a Freezer:
